Kate Maher, DVM
HSVMA LOUISIANA STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Dr. Kate Maher received her DVM in 2015 from Mississippi State University.  Following graduation, she built a house call practice in Lafayette, Louisiana focusing primarily on hospice care and humane euthanasia.  Realizing the desperate need for in-home care in her community, she expanded her practice to include preventative medicine. While the COVID pandemic caused the mobile practice to close, Dr. Kate still participates in low-cost vaccine clinics on the weekends to fulfill her passion for caring for homeless and underserved pets. She also works as a relief veterinarian at local clinics on a weekly basis.

As a resident of South Louisiana, Dr. Maher has seen numerous natural disasters.  To better serve animals during instances of flooding and hurricanes, she became certified in FEMA Incident Command, the National Incident Command Management System, and Hazardous Materials. She works and coordinates with numerous national rescue organizations to assist large evacuation operations during crisis situations.

Dr. Maher is a member of the AVMA, the Florida VMA and the HSVMA.  She is also a member of multiple VMA Political Action and Community Outreach Committees, and she was selected as a member and facilitator of the Louisiana VMA's 'Power of 10' Leadership Program.

Dr. Maher's personal interests include welfare legislation, TNR programs and reducing pet overpopulation by implementing educational programs for kids and adults. She recently published her first children's book, Didi the Picky Puppy, to combine her passion for children, pets, and the veterinary profession.

She currently lives in Louisiana with her husband, daughter, and five rescue dogs.
