Veterinary Professionals: Take Part in Spay Day

Veterinary professionals are key to the success of Spay Day.

It's time for Spay Day, an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, which will be held on February 22, 2011.

Once again, HSVMA is pleased to announce our partnership with Spay Day and would like to encourage veterinary professionals to participate in this campaign.

How Can I Get Involved and What Do I Need to Know?

  • Find a Spay Day event near you, and ask if you can join their team
  • Form or join a coalition of local veterinarians and hold a city, county, or statewide Spay Day event
  • Be prepared! Find out How to Organize a Spay Day Event and learn what happens Behind the Scenes at a Spay Day Event
  • Promote your Spay Day event; personalize our poster and make copies for your clinic
  • Offer your existing clients—or only new clients—a special discount on all spay/neuter surgeries performed during the month of February, the last week of February, or just on the last Tuesday of February (Spay Day)
  • Discuss the importance of spay/neuter with clients whose pets are not yet altered; promote early-age sterilization so that animals are altered before unplanned and unwanted litters are born
  • Contact your local animal shelter and volunteer to spay or neuter a certain number of adoptable animals at no charge. Ask the shelter to provide the animals' adopters with your business card for follow-up health care visits. Find shelters near you at theshelterpetproject.org
  • Many communities and states pass a Spay Day resolution every year—support these legislative efforts
  • Write an op-ed or letter to the editor of your local newspaper educating readers about Spay Day and the importance of spay/neuter
  • Distribute information about Spay Day and the importance of spay/neuter
  • Share these helpful videos with friends—How to Care for Your Spayed or Neutered Pet and How to Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered
