Holly Cheever, DVM

Dr. Holly Cheever graduated from Harvard University, summa cum laude, in 1971 and from The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1980 with a class rank of #1. She has been in private practice ever since, with The Animal Hospital in Guilderland, NY for almost twenty years.

In addition to her private practice serving companion animals and wildlife, Dr. Cheever presents programs to students on environmental and animal welfare issues. She also is a regular lecturer at veterinary schools, providing mentoring in the practice of veterinary medicine with an emphasis on animal welfare. She serves as a consultant for local, state and national animal protection organizations, and assists law officers in animal abuse cases. She has also worked for many municipalities and states to eliminate the cruelty involved in urban carriage horse tourist rides.

For her work in helping to prevent animal cruelty and educate the public about this subject, Dr. Cheever has won awards from the New York State Troopers, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the Untied States; she was named Veterinarian of the Year by the New York State Humane Association in 1991. She was the veterinary columnist for Good Housekeeping from 1997 to 2001.

Dr. Cheever is a member of the Leadership Council of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, vice president of the New York State Humane Association, and is on the advisory board for the New England Antivivisection Society, having retired from their Board of Directors in 1999.  She currently resides on a small farm sanctuary in upstate New York with her husband and four children.
