HSVMA at SAVMA Symposium 2011: California Bound

February 21, 2011

HSVMA is attending SAVMA Symposium 2011 at the University of California Davis in March and will be offering opportunities for students to hear from our veterinary members about animal welfare topics, gain practical skills, and network with other student and professional members.

HSVMA lectures

HSVMA will be hosting two presentations at the symposium:

On the Front Line: The Veterinarian's Role in Recognizing, Reporting and Preventing Animal Cruelty

Presenter: Bonnie Yoffe-Sharp, DVM

Date/Time: Friday, March 23, 9 a.m.

Description: As an animal advocate and veterinary professional, one of the most important tasks you may undertake is recognizing and reporting animal abuse and cruelty. This presentation will provide guidance on recognizing animal abuse and neglect, understanding the veterinary professional's responsibilities in reporting these cases to the appropriate authorities, and preventing abuse in the community.

Opportunities in Shelter Medicine

Presenter: Richard Bachman, DVM

Date/Time: Friday, March 23, 11 a.m.

Description: There are myriad opportunities for veterinarian professionals to get involved and have a positive impact on the health and welfare of shelter animals. This presentation will outline ways that veterinary students can gain exposure to shelter medicine issues and challenges while in school, review opportunities available for advanced training in shelter medicine, and provide an overview of how practicing veterinarians can take simple steps to get involved in shelter medicine work in their community and beyond.

Suture lab

Our popular suture lab is one of the wet labs at this year’s symposium. The Suturing 101 wet lab will teach students basic suturing and ligature techniques, instrumentation, and suture handling, with a focus on developing high-quality, efficient skills. Each student who attends will receive a suture board to take home for ongoing practice.

Please note: Registration for the wet lab must be done with your SAVMA Symposium 2011 registration.

Networking event

On Wednesday, March 23, we will be hosting a special networking event for our HSVMA student and veterinary members at a local brewery in Davis. The evening will begin with a networking reception, followed by a presentation about marine mammal advocacy by Western University veterinary student, Heather Rally. Heather will speak about her experience promoting the 2009 Oscar award-winning documentary, The Cove, which investigated dolphin slaughter in Japan, and her current work with Project Gulf Impact documenting the BP Gulf Coast oil spill and its consequences on the environment.  Food and drink will be served.
